When I began this series, I intended to name the paintings after plot numbers or last names of families. Then I realized that cemeteries have always been about the stories and those naming ideas were too cold for the lives that reached their conclusion in Mount Hope. I’m a storyteller, so, even though sometimes they are sad ones, I’ll tell the story in paint, too.
Little One Lost is inspired by the grave of little Cynthia Pope, who died at 15 months old. Her father was a dentist here in Franklin and her sister was a noted pianist and piano teacher. Their family home still stands on 3rd Avenue just off the square. She is one of many little ones lost long before their time at Mount Hope Cemetery.
